History

Presentations on history and culture will investigate prehistoric Africa covering period of the arrival of the first human settlers; development of agriculture, architecture, arts and the interactions between Africa and the Mediterranean civilizations; the Iron Age empires that consolidated trade and developed centralized states; the slave-trading kingdoms, jihads, and colonial invaders of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; the period in which France and Great Britain controlled most of Africa and the events that characterized the post-independence Africa.

Discuss the effects of colonialism and slavery on the continents of Africa, Americas, Asia, the Pacific and the rest of the world in terms of economics, state formation, religion, culture, arts, race and ethnicity, gender and kinships, diseases and healthcare among Africans and the Diaspora.

Participants wishing to present are requested to submit abstracts via email to info@africa-first.com not later than April 1, 2010. No abstracts will be accepted after this date.

Abstracts must be typewritten in 1.5 line spacing with font of 12-point in size, and not to exceed 500 words in English language.

The full text of all presentations not exceeding 10 pages each must be received by Africa First, LLC in Microsoft Word format not later than June 15, 2010 via email to info@africa-first.com. No presentations will be accepted after this date.

Diseases and Medicines

Presentations on medicine and diseases, should bear in mind that the key objective of the conference is to identify traditional medicines from raw vegetative and animals sources, and cultural methods used in the prevention and management of HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, cancer, sickle cell, anaemia, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke and mental disorders, for further evaluation of safety, efficacy and quality standards.

Patents, copyrights and intellectual property on indigenous knowledge and traditional medicine

Whereas developing countries are inherently tied to their cultural and traditional ways of life. Intellectual property laws currently applicable in these countries are based on western jurisprudence. They are specifically designed to validate western intellectual approaches and do not adequately recognize or promote advancement of customary and indigenous knowledge forms.

Abstracts/presentations will discuss the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and its relationship with the laws of countries which are members of the World Trade Organization, and their collective relevance to and impact on indigenous knowledge forms, especially traditional medicine. Cite case studies and laws.

Submit drafts of sui generis intellectual property legislations which will give full recognition to customary and indigenous knowledge forms, and provide benefit sharing advantages to local people from exploitation of biodiversity, discourage piracy, encourage indigenous innovations and foster mutually beneficial alliances between traditional medicine practitioners and the scientific community in therapeutic and pharmaceutical enterprises.
